The Hare Raiser: My hare tips his hat with a nod of whimsical irony towards the rich tapestry of Cotswold landscape, encompassing all walks of life and the traditions embroiled in our history.

It was important to me to create something that celebrated the history of the Cotswolds, especially the equine world in which I am heavily immersed within both creatively and personally. So much local industry within the Cotswolds revolves around horses. Equine pursuits have helped shape the Cotswolds landscape, many of it’s inhabitants career paths, and traditions. I also needed to create a character that would be attractive and full of personality. I wanted the piece to be fun, to celebrate a bit of cheeky irony within the design as well so as to add further interest to the artwork. The design whilst being humorous is also very traditional which is fitting for the area.

Within this piece I wanted to capture as much texture as I could, so that it actually reflected my artwork style and all that I am attracted to capturing within my pieces of art. I love the gnarly yet elegant textures of hares and felt that by sculpting over the top of the fibreglass mould I was provided with, I would be able to formulate a base that I could really relate to that allows me to emphasise texture and charm within the artwork. I am pleased that I have managed to stay true to my artwork style when creating this sculpture; in not only emphasising the physical quality of the surface of the piece but by also staying true to my colour palette, I adore natural tones and was happy to be able to use the recommended paints in such a way as to mimic the pastel tones I normally create my artworks with.

Katie Hough – Artist, creator of ‘The Hare Raiser’ has become internationally renowned over the years for creating unique, heart-felt and beautifully bespoke Equine and Pet Portraits. She manages to capture the very essence and true character of her subjects within her own distinctive style that is instantly recognisable.

Katie’s gallery works are also passionately collected by all those who appreciate and adore the equine world, British Countryside and it’s wildlife. Most famously perhaps are her hare collections which resonate with so many, as her organic style depicts these charming creatures masterfully. In fact many of her hare pieces were inspired by Katie’s House Hare Willow, who has been influential and a treasured little companion. She shares her life with many creatures such as her beautiful and bright working cocker spaniel called Skye, and there is the magnificent Stozie, Katie’s Andalusian Horse. All have featured heavily within her gallery collections as well as the vast abundance of wildlife that surrounds her studio and home which is nestled within the Cotswold countryside.

It is her passion for animals and the British Countryside that fuels her artwork and it is this love and understanding for her subjects anatomical and behavioural elements that emanates through her work. She lives and breaths all that she depicts. Her studio and home is situated within the Cotswolds; leafy green and a bustle with wildlife. When she is in the studio she has been known to be joined by either her free roaming house hare, Skye or by the very friendly Robin pair that is happy to pop in and out of the windows of her studio fluttering for food from her hand. To unwind she horse rides, favouring the evenings when she is likely to bump into deer, owls and other creatures all of which inspire her works.

She strives to create artwork that captures a natural moment and the true character of her subjects, she wants all that she creates to be artworks you can truly relate to, be it a personal and bespoke commission or a country life scene.
