The Cotswold Roses Hare

About the Hare

My hare is inspired by the cottages and gardens of the Cotswolds, which during the summertime are rich in colour and are inspiring for their character and charm. This design depicts blooming summertime roses trailing up a Cotswold stone wall, using intense colours and bold shapes. The composition is designed to give the feel of rambling roses spreading and growing, whilst allowing space and contrast to evoke the mottled and textured colours of the traditional Cotswold stone. Layers and textural effects will be used with the paint to capture the depth of the green leaves, which is a distinct characteristic of the Cotswolds. From the beginning of spring and into late summer the countryside is filled with vivid greens. The roses will be painted with a depth and perspective to bring the flowers to life, and with my expressive style will give the hare vibrance and character.

I recently graduated from Aberystwyth University with a first class BA in Fine Art and History of Art. My degree work particularly focussed on walking through the Welsh landscape, which inspired me to look at the nature of the objects I encountered and observed. From the marks made by a hermit crab in the sand, the glint of water on a shell and colours in the sand I became passionate about evoking these details in paint. I found spirituality in the unrelenting movement of the sea, which reduces all things to sand, and naturally arranges the pebbles into beautiful compositions.

I now live and work in Stroud, Gloucestershire and my paintings in oils and acrylics respond to the beauty of nature and the countryside that surround me. The Cotswolds has a wealth of subject matter to explore, and is unique in its character and gentle variations in the landscape. I explore and paint the landscapes, still life and commissioned pieces upon request, often outdoors in the landscape braving all weathers.

My work responds to the delicate effects of light through trees, memories of a walk or a poetic arrangement of objects. I paint mostly in oils for their intensity of colour and their variety in depth and opacity. For me, inspiration is found in familiar places, in particular my garden, a place of change, nurture and personality. A place to contemplate my thoughts, the garden is an endless source of inspiration for me to watch nature evolve and to absorb myself into painting.
